하지만 아니야. 물론 난 포기해야 해, 그러나 그때쯤이면 난 경이로움에 휩싸여 반쯤 미쳐 있네 - 무성한 잎, 고요한 나뭇가지, 부질없는 나의 노력. 난 그 달콤하고 중요한 장소에서 크게 웃네, 이 세상을 한껏 찬양하며.

메리 올리버의 이 시는 그녀의 시집 "천 개의 아침" (A Thousand Mornings, 2012)에 수록되어 있다.
자연의 경이로움을 찬미하는 시이다. 시인은 하루 종일 나무의 잎을 세며, 몰두해 있다.
친구들은 그녀가 그렇게 시간을 낭비하는 것을 어리석다고 여긴다. 하지만 시인은 그렇지 않다고 주장한다.
'나뭇가지 사이의 고요함' (the quietness of the branches) 속에서,
'무성한 나뭇잎' (the abundance of the leaves),
을 세는 '자신의 노력이 부질없을지' (the hopelessness of my effort) 모르나, 시인은 은총이 가득한 자연 속에서 기쁨에 충만하여, 세상을 찬양하고 있다.
'난 그 달콤하고 중요한 장소에서 크게 웃네,
이 세상을 한껏 찬양하며.'
(And I am in that delicious and important place,
roaring with laughter, full of earth-praise.)
라고 하였다.

Foolishness? No, it's not

Sometimes I spend all day trying to count leaves on a single tree. To do this I have to climb branch by branch and write down the numbers in a little book. So I suppose, from their point of view it’s reasonable that my friends say: what foolishness! She’s got her head in the clouds again!
But it’s not. Of course I have to give up, but by then I am half crazy with the wonder of it – the abundance of the leaves, the quietness of the branches, the hopelessness of my effort. And I am in that delicious and important place, roaring with laughter, full of earth-praise.
